It is Time to See in Color!

Someone was talking to me the other day about "color". They were saying that we should not see "color" when we look at someone. They believe that seeing color leads to judgement, discrimination and racism.

While I fully understand the sentiment behind their reasoning, I disagree, and here's why...

Each one of us is born with a unique genetic makeup. We have variations in ethnicity, hair color, eye color, height, bone structure, weight, talents, strengths, weaknesses, personalities and yes, skin color.

Every one of those things are part of who we are. They combine to be what makes us... us. If we were to take one of those things away, we would be different. No longer who we were. We would be missing something.

Part of what makes our species so incredibly beautiful are those very differences. The patchwork of humanity is so richly varied! It is what is so wonderful about us. Why would we want to ignore one of the most beautiful aspects of our diversity?

I believe that we should be embracing color. We should celebrate the splendor of each shade on the canvas of humanity. If we ignore it, we will miss out on all of that beauty!

Rejoice in who you are and how wonderfully you were made. Celebrate the beauty of humanity in all its glorious array. Love your neighbor as yourself. Smile more often. Bless others and be blessed, y'all! <3

For the Love of All Things Holy...

PLEASE STOP letting the scale control you!

Let me explain a few things about our vile enemy the scale and why you need to STOP letting it determine your success/failure and define your results.

We
ight fluctuation on the scale can be frustrating and even discouraging. Even if we do everything right, drink enough water, workout and follow a proven meal plan to the letter, it isn’t uncommon to see the number on the scale jump around. I’m not talking here and there, I’m talking daily, guys. Even throughout the day.

Before I get into some of the more common reasons that we see our weight “jump around” like that, I really want to address the issue of frequent weigh ins.

I do not recommend weighing yourself on a daily basis. I can hear you asking “Why not?”. Well, for a couple reasons, really.

First, it is a completely inaccurate representation of our progress. If you had access to a lab to run a diagnostic daily you would be able to discover “why” the number is fluctuating, but that still wouldn’t tell you how you are doing fitness wise.

Second, it causes us to doubt the program we are following and the results we are getting, due to seeing the daily weight fluctuation. When we doubt our progress/results, we get discouraged. We then begin to self-sabotage by eating junk, skipping workouts…

Throw in negative self-talking and eventually we simply give up and quit. I cannot stress how strongly I recommend that you only weigh yourself once a week at MOST. This gives you a more reasonable idea of how you are progressing on your chosen program, but still, don’t let that number be how you measure your progress.

Now, I want to take a look at some common reasons that we see our scale weight fluctuate from day to day.

Reason #1: Time of Day. I recommend that you weigh yourself at the same time every day. Our weight increases as the day progresses, so we generally weigh our “lightest” in the morning.
For most of us the goal is to live a healthier lifestyle. Whether your goal is trying to lose fat, build muscle, or just cut out the junk, this means drinking our daily quota of water. For most of us the amount of water we need to drink is in the neighborhood of a gallon. Did you know that a single gallon of water (approx. 128 ounces) weighs 8.35 pounds?

For the sake of argument, let’s say you only drink a half gallon of water per day. That means that your weight will be fluctuating up and down as you drink, and make your subsequent trips to the bathroom.

Additionally, as you eat throughout the day you will be adding the weight of the foods you are ingesting. Depending on your caloric need combined with how much of what types of food you eat to meet that requirement, you could be increasing your weight by a few pounds by evening.

These are two reasons I strongly recommend weighing yourself first thing in the morning. It only takes a couple seconds and you should only be doing this no more than ONCE per week.

Reason #2: Attire. You might think that this one is intuitive, but not everyone thinks about what they are wearing when they step on the scale. It may seem like a trivial reason but let me explain why it’s not. There can be anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds of difference added to your scale weight if you are not weighing yourself wearing roughly the same thing each time you weigh in.

Try to make sure you weigh yourself wearing the same clothing (or at least as similar as possible). I personally recommend that when you weigh yourself wear just a swim suit or underwear/underwear and a bra. (You can weigh yourself sans clothing if the setting is private and you want to be as accurate as possible. I have not personally noticed a difference in weight on my scale between swimsuit/undergarments and nothing.)

Reason #3: Dehydration. When we don’t drink enough water, our bodies begin to store up water from any source it can. It is our body’s way of keeping us hydrated. This not only causes visible signs like bloating, fatigue and diminished cognitive abilities, but the stored water causes the number on the scale to creep up.

It is important, both for your “results” and your health that you make sure you are drinking enough water. This is especially true when temperatures are up and when you are working out. If you are going to be exerting yourself, you need to make sure you are properly hydrated.

If you see that number on the scale creeping up, think about whether or not you have had enough water to drink. The standard recommendation is to drink a minimum of half your weight in ounces. (Ex. You weight 140 lbs. You should drink 70 ounces.) When you exercise or are out in the sun for a prolonged time, you need to increase that number.

Which leads me to reason #4…

Reason #4: Constipation. Everyone’s body is not necessarily on the same page with waste production. Most people are on different schedules (which is good news for restroom lines…).

Did you know that it is actually quite common for people to be constipated? There are several factors that can have an effect on regularity and consistency. (Yuck, I know, but relevant none the less. Overall health includes our digestive system.) Some things that tend to influence this are diet (are you getting enough fiber?); dehydration (even slight dehydration will have an impact on our waste); an increase in stress can result in constipation; traveling for a lengthy period of time; lack of/poor quality of sleep; even hormones associated with a woman’s menstrual cycle can influence how our bodies process waste.

Even if we are getting the correct amount of water and fiber in our diet, (which does help to minimize the risk of constipation), it can still happen as a result of other factors and it will have an effect on the number we see on the scale.

Reason #5: Edema. Edema is also known as water retention. Basically, it is swelling of the body. (We hear it called bloating.) It is primarily caused by fluid retention. It occurs in either the spaces between the cells in our body or in our circulatory system.

Edema results in puffiness/swelling of the face, feet, ankles, and/or abdomen. In some cases it may also cause shortness of breath, changes in our mental state, and be responsible for muscle aches.

One cause of Edema, or water retention, is excessive intake of salt. Basically, eating too much salty food. The main component of salt is sodium. The body’s response to excess sodium is to dilute it by increase the water level. Salt makes you thirsty, you drink more and your body retains this water to create the proper balance. Reducing the amount of salt in your diet will help you to release a little water retention. Water retention can make a 2 pound difference in weight.

Edema is also a symptom of potassium deficiency. Things like fish, dark leafy greens, mushrooms, avocados and bananas are healthy sources of potassium.
Be mindful of both of these possible factors if you see an increase on the scale or notice that you are experiencing bloating.

Reason #6: Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can play a significant part in weight fluctuation. When we eat more carbohydrate than our bodies need our blood sugar levels increase. Excess carbs are stored as glycogen in our liver, muscles and fat cells. Our bodies need to maintain a balance between glycogen and water. The ratio is roughly 1 part (ex. gram) of glycogen to 3-4 parts (grams) of water.

If you are consuming excessive amounts of carbohydrates you will gain weight. Likewise, if you are not eating roughly the same amount of carbohydrates each day, you will see your weight fluctuate up and down.

This is another reason that it is better to only weigh yourself weekly as opposed to daily. Doing so reduces the mental/emotional impact of seeing sometimes drastic daily fluctuations.

Reason #7: Location. You may have never considered this, but where we place our scale can have an impact on the number we see. For example, if you place my scale on a soft surface, like an area with carpet, your weight will read lower by as much as 11-17% depending on carpet thickness and padding. When it is placed on a firm surface, you will see that weight difference restored.

This is because of varying degrees of compression. With increased compression you will see a decrease in “weight”. For example if I put my scale on the couch and stand on it, it reads 35.1 lbs., but when I place it on the hard wood it reads 130.03 lbs. Soft surfaces make it difficult to obtain an accurate scale reading. For this reason you need to place your scale on a flat, hard surface.

It is also important to place the scale on the same type of flooring each day to prevent false fluctuation in readings.

Surviving the Scale and Keeping Your Motivation..

The first thing to accept and remember is that daily weight fluctuations are normal. Eating the exact same thing each day is not only boring it is incredibly unlikely. Never mind that it is not at all balanced. Variety is good not just for our palates, but for our nutrition.

What is important is that you do your best to make healthy lifestyle choices. Get in that workout to help reduce stress and improve your sleep quality. Reduce your intake of junk food, high sugar and caloric beverages. Decrease your sodium intake. Don’t put artificial/synthetic products into your system. Most importantly: STOP letting the scale determine your success and worth!

When you do weigh yourself, (NOT DAILY), keep the time of day consistent, make sure you are wearing similar attire, and place the scale on the same, hard, surface. This will reduce some of the excessive fluctuation you see.

To emphasize this point I weighed myself daily for 6 days, wearing the same thing, on the same surface, at the same time in the morning and evening. The following photo is the result.

If you can, STOP using the scale to measure your progress. Non-scale results are FAR more accurate than what your mass * gravity equals. ;)

The BIG Reveal!!!!

I can't believe it is finally time to share the news about what I have been putting together for a couple weeks now! I am so EXCITED about this, you guys!!! ^_^

This is so HUGE for us!

If you are familiar with my story, you know that my heart is all about serving and blessing others. In fact, for those of you who know what the 5 Love Languages are, my number 1 is acts of service. (If you don't go check it out here: http://www.5lovelanguages.com/ I would love to hear your results!)

I love nothing more than being able to bless someone by helping them. That is probably why I fell in love with being a Health & Fitness Coach! Being able to encourage other people to dream BIG, reach for their goals, and help them find the tools they need to achieve success, is one of the MOST rewarding things I have ever done! (Apart from raising my children.) ;)

Early this year, I stepped WAY outside of my comfort zone and got certified to be a Fitness Instructor because I LOVED the program I was doing and I believe it is something that people need! It is something that helps people grow stronger physically, push past mental walls, feel better than they have before and live healthier lives. ^_^

You guys, obesity in America has become an incredibly serious problem. Over one third of the adult population is obese. Think about that for a minute. That number alone is staggering. Obesity leads not only to emotional suffering, but serious physical health problems like diabetes, heart attack, certain types of cancer and preventable deaths. It is a heart breaking trend that is devastating the lives of so many Americans. It is a trend that is being passed on to our children with 17% of all children being obese. That is roughly 12.7 MILLION children facing the future health risks associated with obesity. ( http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/childhood.html )

This is something we need to take seriously and something we need to fight. So much of the health related suffering that is a result of obesity can be prevented with proper training, education and access to the tools necessary to live healthy lives.

Studies show that people with lower incomes are more likely to suffer from obesity. ( http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html )

So, are you looking at the title of this post and wondering "When is she going to get to the point?"

Well... HERE IT IS!

My husband and I have combined our love for helping others with our passion for improving health and fitness and started a GO FUND ME account.

Our goal is to raise enough money to be able to be able to partner with various local organizations and offer a variety of FREE Fitness Classes to single parents and low income families that would not otherwise have access to them.

We believe that the knowledge, information and tools to live the healthiest life possible should be available and accessible to EVERYONE regardless of their economic status!

We would deeply appreciate your support in this exciting new endeavor. If you believe in what we are doing please head over to our page: http://www.gofundme.com/GivingBackHealth

Not everyone has the time or calling to be a Fitness Instructor or Health Coach, but each one of us can make a difference in the lives of others! You can help us change lives, set new, healthier standards, show children that there is a better way and give people hope where they had none.

If you are unable to donate at this time we completely understand! Please consider sharing the link to our Go Fund Me page, your support and simply sharing what we are doing gets the word out and may inspire others to help as well.

As always, we are deeply and eternally thankful for all your support, encouragement and help! We would not be where we are without you!

Our gratitude, love and blessings to you and yours... <3

Losing isn't Everything When There is so Much to Gain

I can't believe it is finally time to share the news Yay!!! I am down several more inches and another couple pounds, but that is not the best part...

The best part is how I'm feeling! So much has changed about me physically, mentally, emotionally...

I FEEL so much better! I was so tired before and the worst part was that I had become so accustomed to it that I didn't even notice. Tired was "normal". It wasn't until I started eating healthy and working out that I felt energized again!

I sleep so much better than I did before. I would wake up all the time and now I sleep through the night. I feel rested and ready to go first thing in the morning and I have the energy I need to do a second workout in the evening.

I feel better about myself. I'm gonna be honest for a second... When I wasn't working out, I was "squishy". My kids said I was "built for comfort". If I jumped, parts jiggled that should not jiggle. hahaha My body is becoming toned, there is definition beginning to show, I don't jiggle as much! :D

Things that would weigh on my mind don't bother me as much. It is easier to "roll with the punches" now than it was when I was unhealthy.

The biggest change though, would be eating. I NEVER drank water. Seriously. I lived on soda and an occasional glass of juice that probably didn't contain much actual juice. I ate fried food like it was going out of style. I was blessed in that my blood work was fine, but I was far from healthy. Now, after eating healthy for months, having soda and fried food makes me feel sick. I feel nauseated when I have it. The other day I told my husband, I have no idea how we used to feel okay eating like that! It's crazy!

At any rate, choosing to live a healthy lifestyle isn't just about looking good in a swim suit, although that is one of my goals, it is about improving every area of your LIFE.

The question is... are you ready to make that change?

No Guilt

I saw something today that just flat out broke my heart. I saw someone turn their back on a friend for being "too involved" with their family and not giving up time with their kids to "go out" with their friend.

Believe me, I understand feeling left out. It is far too familiar a feeling. What I don't understand is the way this person flat out tried to guilt their "friend" for making, what I believe is, the right choice.

Friend or not they have no business or right to throw a person's choice to take care of their family in their face and try to shame them over how they live. If you aren't living their life, You.Don't.Know. Period. It may seem like you do, but I promise there is PLENTY they don't share. You don't know the sacrifice. You don't know the pain. You don't know how torn they feel. You don't know what they have given up and what they would give up if they had to. NO two people are exactly the same. They don't do things the same. Guess what?! They don't NEED TO. I really wanted to say something, but what good would it do? Sometimes people cannot see past themselves. :( None the less, my heart ached for the betrayal.

If I have to choose I will ALWAYS choose to do right by my babies. I owe them my BEST. Period. They are worth it and they deserve it. I cherish every second I spend with them. They grow up far too fast not to. So I know I'll be busy, I'll be unavailable, I'll be slow to respond and limited by schedules, but there is nothing more important that I could be doing then giving my all to these people that God has blessed us with.

That said, if you feel like I neglect you, or am "too busy", I am really sorry, I don't want any of y'all to ever feel that you don't matter to me! You do! I simply have a responsibility to wipe away the tears, to pray away the nightmares, to hold their heads when they are throwing up, to snuggle them when they need a Mommy snuggle, to teach them all I can in the limited time I have. To raise them to put others first, to love other people no matter how they are treated, to be kind, generous and respectful. To teach them never to do what I saw done.

So, to all my friends who are out there sacrificing for others, working hard, raising a family, in service to their country, in service to their community, whatever it is that you do that takes you away from your friends and leisure time... Thank you. *hugs* Your effort is appreciated and your sacrifice is valued!!!

Ignore the rest and know that you are doing the BEST you can, and that is what matters! <3

Children...

They have a way of bringing joy to any moment they touch.

Yes, they can be obnoxious. Yes, they require work. With children comes a level of worry previously, blissfully, unknown. Yet, with children comes an unexplainable joy that has the power to consume your heart.

It comes out of nowhere and hits you like a brick wall. It will stop you dead in your tracks. One minute you will be thinking about all of life's stress; all of your to-do; all of the pressures and worries and then... a smile. A giggle. A hug. An "I love you, Mommy", and all of that is gone. Your heart is suddenly overflowing with a love so great you would swear it could burst your heart inside of your chest.

Sure holidays are "supposed" to be happy, but they aren't always. Life happens and as adults we have a hard time separating the heavy stuff out so we can just enjoy whatever moment is at hand. Children have the unique ability to do that for us. We can be lost in thoughts of finances, frustrations and pressures and all it takes is hearing that precious laughter... It is the kind of laughter that is filled with joy and consumed with the moment. It is distraction free and undeterred in it's ability to shatter the bubble of life-stuff and draw you in to the moment they are living in.

It is what makes all the shopping, cleaning, egg-stuffing, prep-work worth while! They bring the "magic" to the moment. For children each egg holds the promise of a smile and the sound of laughter. Genuine, carefree, joy-filled laughter. Without children they are just a piece of plastic littering the yard. They are cold and meaningless without the response of the child.

Holiday traditions aren't what make the holidays meaningful, it's the people you spend them with. The lives they touch. The memories they will create.

Regardless of what the occasion is, always remember what truly matters. Be thankful for the people you have. Love without limit. Live in the moment. Listen to the laughter.

We are blessed to have these few years with our little ones to make the memories that will last for a lifetime!

Bless and be blessed, y'all! <3

What Can I Say...

About the day we celebrate the unbearable sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross? He set us free. His suffering made it possible for us to be forgiven and our relationship with our Father restored. He took on all of our blame, all of our guilt and all of our sin just so that we could know the love of our Father.

Can you imagine being beaten and then killed, in such an incredibly painful manner, so that someone else wouldn't have to take the blame for what they did?

It wasn't until I was a mother that I could imagine doing that for someone else. Being a parent gave me a tiny glimpse of how God loves us. My love for my babies, the three people that I would do anything to protect, even die for, is a faint projection of how our Father loves us.

Why do I say "faint" projection? Well, because even in that love for them, I could not imagine sending one of them to die for the others, let alone for people who have betrayed me. Yet, that is exactly what God did for us. He sent His son... His son who had done no wrong, to stand in our place. To take the guilty verdict upon Himself, and bear the unbearable for us.

How could He do such a thing for people who defied His laws, who spat in His face, who rejected His loving plans, who betrayed and disregarded Him??? I cannot comprehend the depth and breadth of a love that would pay such a great price just to be reunited with the people that so utterly rejected Him.

That is His heart for us. For ALL of us. That not one of us would be separated from Him but that all of us would be returned to His loving arms. No matter what we have done, He still wants us back. He still wants to forgive us. He still wants to set us free from the pain, the guilt, the anger, the suffering...

What greater gift could we receive than this?

How could I ever thank Him enough?

Father, I can find no words to express my gratitude for what you have done. I don't even know where to begin. You know our hearts, Lord, so I will pour out my heart to you always. I will share this gift with the world. I will endeavor to honor your sacrifice and when I fall short, I will ask for forgiveness again. It is by your loving grace alone that I have been set free, and for that I am eternally grateful! <3

Bless and be blessed, y'all!
